Alto is a founding vineyard of the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail and the recipient of more than 500 national and international awards for its exquisite wines.

All nine acres of scenic forestry and supple vines are family-owned by brother and sister duo, Paul and Adelle Renzaglia.

The vineyard started in 1984 by planting grape varieties that were unheard of in any region of the state. This included Chancellor, Chambourcin, Vidal, and Villard Balance. µ

Word got out and popularity spread, leading to the creation of the first southern Illinois wine trail.

In the fall of 2000, owner Jim Ewers laid the first rows of grapes on what is now Blue Sky Vineyard.

The Tuscan-inspired winery is designed with stucco walls, Portuguese tiles, and carved wooden doorways to give an international feel without straying too far from home.

Jack Dunker had a dream of transforming his beautiful countryside property into a destination for great food, wine, and service.

Short description of the winery

The history of this wine domain dates back to 1975 when the first vines of the Fuqua vineyard were planted by Gary Fuqua’s father. It became the Wichmann Vineyard in 2010 when the Wichmann family acquired the land. Over the years they have added their own personal flair to their wines.

In 2021 three wines earned bronze and silver medals in the Illinois Wine State Fair Competition.

Everyone is always welcome during their opening hours to taste their delicious wines along with some gourmet crackers. A typical tasting includes a choice of four wines.

The Shawnee Hills Wine Trail

What’s the Shawnee Hills wine trail?

In the summer of 1995, the owners of the first of the three wineries in Southern Illinois (Alto Vineyards, Pomona Winery, Owl Creek Vineyard) realized that they had untapped tourism potential and worked together to create the first wine trail in the state of Illinois.

It has since grown and offers unique, family-owned wineries and vineyards scattered throughout the Shawnee National Forest.
