The reinforcements at the knees and the rear make this a good choice for more challenging hikes.

  • Conforms to body shape for comfort
  • Offers full freedom of movement
  • Impregnation makes the fabric water-repellent

  • Might be too tight and snug for some men’s taste
  • Contains non-textile elements of animal origin

These men’s hiking tights are a balance of everything good. From multiple pockets for convenience of carrying essentials to features like breathability and durability, these leggings boast it all.

In addition to this, the pair is easy to wash at home, dries fast, comes in a wide array of sizes, and makes for a comfortable gear for spring and autumn season.

Here’s Kris’ opinion of these tights:

I wore my Fjallraven’s during a 4-hour hike when it was 30 degrees Fahrenheit.  Although I’m usually quickly cold, the tights kept me warm the whole time. Although these tights are not fleece-lined they are still a good option in these colder temperatures as long as you stay active.

They are true to size. I ordered a size M which fits perfectly although I would have preferred them to be a bit longer.

I like the rough pads on the knees and the seat.  These give the tights a more butchy look and at the same time, they will reduce wear.  These pads are also waterproof which means you shouldn’t worry about sitting down to take a break, even if the stones, tree, or bench is still wet from an earlier downpour.

The button and belt loops make the tights look a little more like pants, given them some more appeal to a manly audience.

I always put most of my stuff in a backpack and the side pockets are all I need to carry those things that I use the most during a hike such as my mobile phone and a small map.  The pockets aren’t as generously sized as those in hiking leggings but I think that is a good thing rather than a bad.  They ensure that all bulky and more heavy items go in the backpack, giving you more flexibility.

These tights aren’t cheap but after several hikes, I’m completely sold. The tights feel very durable and I’m sure I will be wearing them for a long time.

Sylvia with the Fleece Lined Baleaf winter hiking leggings
Tested and approved. This pair of Fleece Lined Baleaf leggings kept Sylvia warm during our long winter hike.

These thermal leggings for hiking offer durability, freedom of movement, and softness during your adventurous excursions.

What’s more? Their flattering, curve-skimming fit feels both comfortable and stylish.

Not only are these cold-weather leggings a practical choice for hiking, but also prove to be a go-to base layer when off for skiing, trail running, and snowshoeing.

What I really like about my Baleaf fleece-lined thermal hiking leggings is that they are very soft and pleasant to wear.

I wore them during a 4-hour hike when it was 32 degrees Fahrenheit and I wasn’t cold during the whole hike.

We did move almost all the time. At the end of the hike we stood still for a while and then I got a bit cold.

I love the fit and the high waistband. The leggings didn’t slide down during the hike and I never had to pull them up.

Although I put my stuff in a backpack, the pockets are deep enough to put a phone in. If you aren’t looking for pockets, they also have fleece leggings without pockets. I have a black pair myself and they are fine too.

The only drawback was that I ordered an XL ( following the sizing chart ) and they are a bit big. I do have to say that I was between 2 sizes.

So, I might order a smaller size next time.

But overall, I’m very satisfied with my choice.

This is the perfect legging for you if you are looking for a very soft warm pair of hiking leggings.

Best waterproof hiking leggings

Fjallraven Abisko is known for its moisture-wicking and water-resistant qualities.

Baleaf women’s fleece-lined leggings are water-resistant.

The water resistance property was added to the leggings as an additional perk and will fade after 9 to 10 washes.

But it isn’t recommended to wear them during a downpour.

To conclude, even the best leggings reviews of hiking tights do not contain any praise for waterproof qualities. Here is an overview of more water-resistant leggings.

So, what’s the best bet to keep yourself dry when hitting the trail on a rainy day? Rain pants and waterproof trousers.

How to choose the best leggings for hiking

Price and comfort are the first things we check out when looking for trekking leggings. But is that enough?

What makes a particular pair of leggings the best men’s hiking tights or women’s hiking tights? Which characteristics and details should you focus on when looking for the best leggings for hiking and are leggings good for hiking?

Below is a list of key points to consider when purchasing your next best hiking leggings.

Weather Conditions

Which hiking legging is best for you depends a lot on the weather in which you will be using them.

The pair that feels comfortable during winter may feel super-lacking in summer or rain.

So, to ensure you pick only the best option.

  • Choose leggings made with lightweight fabrics like cotton, polyester, or nylon with moisture-wicking ability to stay cool during hot, humid weather.
  • Choose softshell pants or tights with their base layer made from wool to stay warm in cold, snowy weather.
  • Choose hiking pants or trousers made with breathable waterproof GORE-TEX or at least water-resistant Omni-Wick™ or Omni-Tech™ technologies to hit the trail during rainy weather.
hiking leggings

Hitting a trail in itchy, sore or bad-fit leggings can dampen the whole experience.

Avoid it by choosing a legging for hiking that:

  • includes sufficient pockets to stash essentials like keys, protein bars, maps, mobile, and compass. Here is a selection of hiking leggings with pockets.
  • is lightweight but durable with nylon elements to make ascending easy while protecting you (and itself) against the elements.
  • offers a snug fit that takes the shape of your body to make you feel as if you are wearing nothing. A gusseted crotch can add to the freedom of movement.
  • preferably has an adjustable waist for a custom fit.
  • is the right length for your height and legs.

Perhaps, breathability is a feature that is not highlighted enough but is vital when choosing the best leggings for hiking.

As much fun as the sport is, it won’t feel great when you are walking with sweat rolling down everywhere below the belt.

Therefore, it is imperative to pick leggings made with breathable fabric while still being weather-resistant.

Some of the best go-to materials are nylon, polyester, and wool. While cotton has excellent breathability and moisture-wicking ability, it lacks durability and can also absorb water.

Skip cotton leggings or those made with thick, heavy material like polyamide when off to the trail. Here we share an overview of the best fabric for leggings

Resistance or Proofing Against Weather

It is always good to stay prepared for any sudden weather changes while still on the trail. Imagine stepping in unexpected water puddles, sitting or slipping on wet grass, and encountering cold wind – all while wearing leggings that cannot combat weather!

Nothing could be more uncomfortable.

Therefore, always look for hiking tights made from fabrics and technologies that are:

  • Either wind- and waterproof,
  • Or wind- and water-resistant.

The features to look for are Omni-Wick™ technology, Omni-Tech™ technology, and GORE-TEX lining, which remain breathable and light while keeping wind, water, and moisture buildup at bay.

The best material would be a blend of nylon and polyester.

Perhaps, durability is a requirement that cannot be overlooked when looking for an athletic outfit.

Choose hiking leggings that are hard-wearing, in addition to being comfortable, breathable, and lightweight.

Materials that ensure longevity include heavy-duty nylon and polyester, with reinforcing patches on high wear areas like knees and the seat.

To conclude, the key features that make a pair of hiking leggings the best choice for you are breathability, weather-resistance, durability, comfort, and mobility.

Travel insurance

Make sure you get travel insurance before taking an adventurous trip. We recommend World Nomads or SafetyWing depending on the type of traveler you are and the activities you want to do.
