Vilamoura is a posh resort town in the Algarve region that’s part of the golden triangle. The golden triangle represents the tourist hotspots of the Algarve. You will find no less than 6 golf courses, an exclusive marina, and several pristine beaches nearby. Do not expect the so-called typical beaches of the Algarve, to visit these you have to travel more to the west in the Algarve.
Like most places in the Algarve, Vilamoura also lives up in high season from June to September. When we were there in January a lot of restaurants were closed, the golf courses, on the other hand, attracted quite a few people and the weather was ideal for playing a round of golf.
Vilamoura is a half hour drive from Faro airport. From Lisbon airport, the trip takes just over 2 hours.
We stayed at the Hilton Vilamoura. The hotel is situated just outside Vilamoura so you can escape the crowds in this coastal town during the summer months. It’s a 10-minute drive downtown and the hotel offers a shuttle service. In the hotel you can relax at one of the many swimming pools, in the extensive spa, on the adjacent golf course and of course in the comfort of your cozy room.

In this post, I will further discuss our stay at this hotel.
Upon arrival, we were welcomed in the elegant lobby of the hotel. We stayed here on points but thanks to our Hilton Gold status we still got a nice upgrade to a King Deluxe Room Plus. A spacious room with a separate sitting area and 2 large flat screen TV’s, one near the sofa and one near the bed. The room also had a glass wall between the sleeping area and the bathroom. A nice design element as it immediately gives an extra feeling of space to the room and you can also enjoy daylight in the bathroom. If you want to enjoy privacy in the bathroom, you can close a curtain in front of the glass wall.
The room also had a large terrace with both 2 loungers and a table with 2 chairs. It will undoubtedly be great to hang out in these loungers in the summer but since we were only in our room in the evening we did not use this.
As this hotel is also part of the Hilton Grand Vacations Club, you can also book 1 and 2 bedroom apartments equipped with 1 or 2 bathrooms and a full kitchenette respectively. This way you can share a room with up to 6 adults.
7 Seven Spa
Adjacent to the Hilton Vilamoura, directly accessible via an underground passage, you will find the 7 Seven Spa. This is the largest spa in Portugal and is a great asset to this hotel. In the spa you will find hammam, sauna, sensory showers, swimming pools with jets and whirlpools as well as pleasant relaxation rooms. I do not lie when I say that during our tour of the spa we were stunned. Not only by the facilities but also by the beautiful decor. This must be one of the most extensive spas that we encountered in a hotel.
Hilton Gold and Hilton Diamond members receive free access to the spa, for others, there is a daily fee. The spa is also open to non-hotel guests.
A visit to the spa is the perfect way to recharge your batteries, or like we did, to fill a drizzly day. If you want to pamper yourself or someone else a little extra, you can do so with one of the treatments that are being offered. We were offered a couples massage in the VIP suite. An exclusive suite with private sauna, steam bath, jacuzzi & relaxation room. A blissful romantic experience and a perfect gift for a honeymoon or an anniversary. Highly recommended!
Plenty of restaurants can be found in Vilamoura but there may be days that you don’t want to head to Vilamoura for dinner. We found ourselves complete unwinded after our spa treatment and decided to dine in Cilantro, one of the in-house restaurants. The menu is not very extensive, a little too limited for a second visit. On the other hand, we certainly cannot complain about what’s on the menu The amuse-bouche made sure we were off to a good start and the food and wine we had chosen turned out to be delicious. The interior of the restaurant is classy and even in the low season, there were still quite a few tables occupied. The service was very attentive and polite. This restaurant certainly is in another league compared to the typical (tourist) restaurants in the Algarve.
The hotel has a second restaurant, Moscada, where breakfast is offered. During our stay, it was closed in the evenings but I suppose that during high season a buffet is offered here for dinner. This restaurant’s interior is not as nice as Cilantro’s. Quite OK for breakfast but it would never appeal to me to come and eat here in the evening. I have to add off course that I’m also not a buffet lover.
The breakfast buffet was very extensive with all the classics you can expect with perhaps as only exception waffles. An omelet station is present as well. More than enough in any case for a good start of the day. The restaurant was never even half full but we noticed that the decibels seriously increased from the moment it became busier. Maybe a downside in the high season, but of course we can not really say anything about this as long as we have not been here in high season.
Aquarela is a third and last restaurant that is located outside, next to the swimming pool, but this was closed during our stay.
In summary, we had a lovely stay. We took it easy and enjoyed a full breakfast every morning. On our only rainy day, the spa was a good alternative. Even to those who would not stay at the hotel, I would certainly recommend a visit to the spa. The hotel is well situated for a golfing holiday or a sun holiday in the Algarve. We explored the entire Algarve from here. To get to the outskirts of the Algarve, like Ponta da Piedada, it will take you more or less one hour as Vilamoura is not really central in the Algarve. The Moscada restaurant seems to become quite noisy as soon as it becomes busy and that maybe the only downside I can think of to visit this hotel during high season.

In this review, we share our personal and honest opinion about our stay. We will never recommend and write about products or brands that we don’t personally use nor believe in. We paid for our stay with our Hilton Honors points. The restaurant costs were covered by us as well. The couples massage and the use of the VIP suite was offered to us free of charge by the hotel.
