Best Airbnbs in Hakone with a private onsen

Private Onsen, tatoo ok

Private room hosted by Yuki

  • 6 guests, 1 bedroom, 1 floor mattress, private toilet
Airbnb in Hakone with private onsen

This room is located in a beautiful traditional Japanese inn, or ryokan, within walking distance of some of the best tourist locations in Hakone.

It is surrounded by forest, giving a beautiful natural feel to the ryokan and making the outdoor onsens (hot springs) even more enjoyable.

This is one of the best features of this Airbnb.

There are four private onsens, two indoor and two outdoor. The private onsens can be reserved in the evenings and are divided into male and female use in the mornings.

The room has traditional tatami mat floors and so there are futons, rather than Western-style beds.

The ryokan allows guests with tattoos (some traditional onsens and ryokans do not allow tattoos) and is also pet-friendly.

There is an additional fee of ¥3500 per pet. The room has a private toilet and sink and a shared dining room.

However, as the ryokan only offers 4 rooms, the shared dining room will not be crowded.

Rating: 4.83

  • Air conditioning
  • Onsen
  • Free parking
  • Washer & dryer
  • Luggage drop off (early arrival or late departure)

This room is part of beautiful ryokan located in the middle of the forest. Surrounded by stunning foliage and grassland, there are amazing views year-round.

While this Airbnb is located further from the station and tourist destinations than some other options, previous guests have stated that the owner is very accommodating in helping to pick them up from the station or drive them back at the end of the stay.

Finding a restaurant in the evening won’t be a problem either. The nearby businesses can pick you up and drop you off so you avoid the inconvenience of walking long distances.

With such beautiful surroundings, most guests said the extra distance was worth it.

This room has a private onsen built from cypress, one of the most popular trees for onsen-building in Japan.

This is due to its aromatic qualities.

The ryokan offers a free breakfast with a number of lunch and dinner recommendations.

Rating: 4.88

Extra Amenities:

What types of Airbnb can you find in Hakone

Ryokans

A Ryokan is a traditional Japanese family hotel.

You’ll sleep in a traditional room on a futon, which is a type of thick mattress, on the floor.

The family who owns the Ryokan is usually very hospitable and helpful. For the best experience, it’s best to choose a small-scale Ryokan.

Because of their popularity, there are now some huge Ryokans, but those are nowhere near as charming as the smaller Ryokans where you still enjoy the direct contact with the family.

You will get a Yukata to wear during your stay. This is a traditional garment that’s comparable to a Kimono. While the Japanese get out the Kimono for more festive occasions, the Yukata is the simpler variety for everyday use.

A stay in a Ryokan is often a bit more expensive than a hotel. Breakfast is usually included and you often have the possibility to book an evening meal as well.

Most Ryokans are also equipped with an onsen where you can wind down after a busy day of temple hopping.

Villas

It is like a home away from home, it will have all the privacy and facilities you’re used to at your own home (or it will at least come close). These villas also often have a private onsen.

A villa allows for regular cooking and cozy evenings with comfortable relaxation.

This is a great option for families as it can be easier to manage a family in a complete, normal house, as opposed to spread across different hotel rooms.

Houses

You will also find plenty of beautiful houses in Hakone.

These houses have everything you need for a wonderful vacation. From a big living room to a fully furnished kitchen.

Often a number of aspects of traditional Japanese design will been incorporated.

Making a stay here very special.

Why should you choose to stay in an Airbnb in Hakone

Accommodation is always a huge consideration when traveling and in recent times this often comes to the Airbnb vs hotel debate.

This is no different in Hakone with a variety of Airbnb options available.

There are a number of aspects to consider when looking at potential Airbnbs.

More privacy

Staying in an Airbnb often provides more privacy than a traditional hotel as Airbnb accommodation is usually separate.

This also allows for more freedom as there aren’t as many strict rules regarding house-cleaning and the like.

Rather, there are usually simple common courtesy guidelines.

This freedom also extends to having a full kitchen and separate rooms, making Airbnb a great choice for longer stays.

More unique and authentic experience

While hotels are fairly similar in most parts of the world, Airbnb can differ hugely by location.

This can provide a more unique and authentic experience of staying in a new place.

This can also allow for meeting local residents and learning local customs and recommendations.

This integration is helpful in bridging the gap between being a tourist and understanding the area, people, and culture better.

Often better value than a hotel especially when you are traveling as a family

When it comes to price, Airbnb can often work out as better value than a hotel, especially considering all the benefits that come with it.

If you are traveling as a family or in a group, it can also be significantly cheaper than a hotel.

Conclusion

Hakone has a well-earned reputation as one of Japan’s top hot springs towns and with its convenient location, it is ideal for a trip away from the busy bright lights of Tokyo.

With steaming hot springs, stunning forests and mountains, traditional Japanese shops, foods and culture, Hakone has it all.

To make your visit to Hakone even better, we have brought together some of the best Airbnbs in Hakone.
