Where to stay in Glacier National Park

There are only a few hotels within the park’s boundaries and not a single Airbnb. This is not really a problem as the park is relatively compact and can be entered through 7 different entrances.

Several accomodations, including various comfy Airbnb’s, can be found in towns and hamlets close to the park’s entrances.

Various areas of the park can only be reached through certain entrances so it’s important to consider where to stay depending on what you want to see and do.

This map shows the various entrances of the park and the location of the Airbnbs. As we don’t know the exact location of the Airbns the pins point to the towns where they’re located.

Here’s a clock-wise overview of the park entrances, starting by the main entrance on the western side of the park..

West Glacier Entrance (West)

This is one of the main entrances of the park.

Through this entrance, you reach the “Going to the sun road”. A road that crosses the park from east to west and a highlight of most visitors.

The entrance is open 24/7 all year-round but the going to the sun road only opens around mid-June and closes again mid-October.

Outside this period you can drive up to Lake McDonald Lodge.

Lake McDonald is also located close to this entrance. It is a beautiful glacier-fed lake. The village of Apgar is nestled along the lakeshore.

It is here where the park’s visitor center is located.

Breathtaking vistas from the Going to the Sun Road
Breathtaking vistas from the Going to the Sun Road

Things to do near West Glacier National Park Entrance

As said above, this entrance is the main gateway to the popular Going to the sun road.

Without any stops, you will drive approximately 2 hours to traverse the park from the West Glacier entrance to the Saint Mary entrance on the east side of the park.

There road is an scenic engineering marvel and there are several pullouts where you can stop to take in the views and capture them on film.

We recommend reserving at least 3 to 4 hours to drive this road.

Many hikes are situated around lake McDonald and several others start from other places next to the Going to the sun road.

If you will be doing some of these hikes we recommend staying a few days on either side of the park.

Various tour operators offer boat tours on lake McDonald and you can also go fly fishing or white water rafting.

Camas Creek Entrance (West)

This is a quiet secondary entrance, a little North of the West Glacier Entrance.

To reach this entrance you will need to travel along a gravel road that follows the Western Edge of the park.

Once inside the park, the Camas road connects the Camas Creek entrance with the Going to the Sun road.

The road is not heavily trafficked and provides good opportunities to see wildlife such as moose, elk, and bear.

The entrance is open during the high season from mid-June to mid-October.

Things to do near the Camas Creek Entrance

Drive along the Camas road around dusk to spot wildlife.

It’s also worthwhile to hike to the lookout at the top of Mount Huckleberry. The hike is a real workout but the views are worth it.

Polebridge Entrace (West)

Polebridge entrance is located further north along the west edge of the park.

You will need to travel along the outside North Fork Road to reach this entrance.

Some sections of this road are paved but there are large stretches of gravel.

This entrance offers access to Bowman Lake, Quartz Lake and Kintla Lake. This is a pristine area of the park. It is left aside by many visitors so these three lakes can truly be described as the hidden gems of Glacier National Park.

The entrance is open during the high season from mid-June to mid-October.

This highway traverses a small section of Glacier National Park before it crosses the border and enters neighboring Waterton National Park in Canada.

This is the shortest route to go from Glacier NP to Waterton NP. The border crossing is only open in summer though, in winter you will need to drive north to Cardston and then west to Mountain View and Waterton NP.

Check the actual opening dates of the border crossing as these can vary by year.

Things to do along Chief Mountain International Highway (Hwy 17)

The Belly River trail and Lee Ridge trail both directly start of Hwy 17. These trails are not heavily trafficked and are a peaceful way to experience the park.

Many Glacier Entrance (East)

The Many Glacier Valley is the second biggest attraction of Glacier National Park. The valley can only be accessed through this entrance.

This effectively means that you will not be able to reach this valley from late fall to early summer.

The entrance is open during the high season but closes together with the going to the sun road.

Driving from Babb to the park entrance takes about 15 minutes.

Cut Bank Entrance (East)

This is a small entrance about 20 miles south of the Saint Mary Entrance.

The Cut Bank ranger station once was the first building in the park but is now only staffed in the summer months.

To reach this entrance you need to follow the Cut Bank Creek Rd. This is a well-maintained gravel road.

The road is not plowed and the entrance is only open in the summer.

Things to do near Cut Bank Entrance

The Cut Bank section of the park is less traveled and home to several breathtaking day hikes and backcountry trails. There is also a small campground.

Hikers looking to escape the crowds that often congest the trails in the popular areas of the park will love this peaceful setting.

Where to stay near Cut Bank Entrance

There are no towns near this entrance. The closest options are Saint Mary to the North, or the East Glacier Park Village to the South.

From Saint Mary it is a 30 minute drive, from East Glacier Park Village the trip takes 40 minutes.

Two Medicine Entrance (East)

This entrance gives access to another particular nice area of the park. It is located a few miles north of the village of East Glacier.

Top reasons to stay in an Airbnb in Glacier National Park

Accommodation is always a huge consideration when traveling and in recent times this often comes to the Airbnb vs hotel debate.

Glacier National Park is no different, there are limited hotels in the park and also the options around the park are limited. Luckily several Airbnb’s can be found in the surrounding towns.

There are a number of aspects to consider when looking at potential Airbnbs.

More privacy

Staying in an Airbnb often provides more privacy than a traditional hotel as Airbnb accommodation is usually separate.

This also allows for more freedom as there aren’t as many strict rules regarding house-cleaning and the like.

Rather, there are usually simple common courtesy guidelines.

This freedom also extends to having a kitchen (or sometimes kitchenette) and separate rooms, making Airbnb a great choice for longer stays.

More unique and authentic experience

While hotels are fairly similar in most parts of the world, Airbnb can differ hugely by location.

This can provide a more unique and authentic experience of staying in a new place. You can find charming cabins and even some amazing treehouses in this blog post.

Staying in an Airbnb also allows for meeting local residents who can share awesome recommendations about local hikes and other activities.

This will help you understand the area and avoid the crowds who will mostly flock to the widely known and popular areas of the park.
