8 adventure activities you must do in South Africa

South Africa is a beautiful country and by just driving through it you will be able to experience a lot of this beauty.

Besides a safari and hiking the country has so much more to offer and your vacation can become so much better if you throw in some adventure and activities.

You will find that South Africa offers so much that you will probably don’t have enough time to do all of them.

Here’s a short list of 8 adventure activities you should do in South Africa.

Bungee jumping and shark cage diving is a little bit too much of a thrill for me but unfortunately, we couldn’t even do all of the other things on this list:

Adventure activities you must do in South Africa

Take a guided cycling tour

Cycling tours are very popular these days.  We took a 3-hour bicycle tour with AWOL tours that took us, among other things, along Castle Good Hope, the Company Gardens, and the colorful houses of Bo-Kaap.

We had just 4 people in our group, including our excellent guide Mel.

She gave us some great insights into the mother city and South Africa during our tour. You can reserve your bicycle tour online

Go whale watching

Boat tours are offered from Hermanus but did you know you could also go whale watching with a helicopter? Whale watching is not new to us, but we never did a helicopter tour.

It is absolutely still on our bucket list.

Go Paragliding (Cape Town)

The images we’ve seen are truly spectacular. Kris was hoping to do this but unfortunately, the weather conditions were not good enough.

He does think it’s fantastic though.  You usually leave from either signal hill or Lion’s head. So we will definitely have to go back to be able to scratch this from Kris’s list.
You can reserve your duo paragliding experience online.

You can cancel 24hrs upfront and you will get a full refund if the activity would need to be canceled due to weather conditions.

Go Ziplining

If you’re lucky you might spot some birds or other small wildlife in the forest but mostly zip lining is just about the fun.

It can be done in many locations across South Africa.  We did ours in the Tsitsikamma National Park.

We had a lot of fun, the guides were very entertaining!

Take a bungee jump or stadium swing

If you’re looking for a thrill you have one of the highest bungee jumps worldwide at the Bloukrans Bridge.  Another thrill is the stadium swing in the beautiful Moses Mabhida stadium that has been build for the world championship soccer a few years ago in Durban.

Get up close and personal with sharks during a shark dive tour

We continue with one more thrill that can also easily be done from various spots along the South African coast.

You can also book a tour that leaves from Cape Town.

The best time of the year to get face to face with the great white shark is April to October.

Go Quad biking

All around South Africa, there’re numerous spots for quad biking.  We took a tour with Wild X adventures in the garden route.

It was a challenging tour with narrow passages and lots of sharp turns all in very dense vegetation.

It was quite a thrill but we had hoped that the tour would have taken us along some more scenic spots.

Discover the Spier wine estate on a Segway

If you love to ride on a segway these tours offered in the Spier wine estate may be something for you.

We had never been on a Segway before but as everything really is so self-explanatory you will be surprised how fast you’re gliding through the wine fields…

South African itineraries

2 weeks in South Africa is not enough to discover it all but does give you the opportunity to discover the lush Southern part of the country. You pass some of the fantastic highlights such as the Cape of Good Hope, the Garden Route, and the Addo Elephant National Park.

Are you planning 3 weeks in South Africa, but could you use a bit of inspiration? Discover this beautiful country with this South Africa 3 week self-drive itinerary. It is a relatively classic road trip that will bring you past all the great landmarks. Ideal if this is your first time in this beautiful country.
